Testimonial from a local client and friend, Dana Henricks:
When it comes to achieving one’s goals, some people need a drill sergeant barking at their heels and other people need that little angel on their shoulder whispering gentle words of encouragement. I am definitely in the latter camp, and Nikki has gone above and beyond her role of official shoulder angel.
Her first act of encouraging me to take control of my physical fitness wasn’t through words at all, but through example. We are in the same knitting club, and due to different circumstances, we had each missed club days and hadn’t seen each other in a little over a month. When I saw Nikki again, the change was stunning. No one would have looked at the “before” Nikki and thought for a minute that she was overweight or even out of condition. But seeing the “after” Nikki, slim as a reed, but in a strong, healthy way, it was apparent that a transformation had taken place. Like in the song about the famous reindeer, you could even say she glowed!
In her characteristically humble and understated way, she simply said, “Oh, I’ve just been goin’ to the gym. Like I used to before.” That was all she said, and I wouldn’t say that the seed had been planted, but I was definitely shaking the seed packet.
When the gym that Nikki went to had a special membership offer going on, that’s when it was planting time! There was no “You should” this or “You really ought to” that. Just a little nudge: “Hey, they’re having a special offer for new members at the gym this month.”
I went, I saw, and I conquered. My first day at the gym, Nikki walked me through my first workout. I had been to a different gym years ago and had been given a quickie tour by an extremely bored employee who couldn’t wait to get back to her book at the reception desk. But with Nikki’s enthusiastic guidance, I really learned how to operate the mysterious elliptical machine and the intimidating weight machines.
Come to find out, I love working out! Today, I am still amazed to see the difference working out just three or four times a week can have on not just my physical fitness, but my mental and emotional fitness, too.
However, life and work sometimes throw me off track. But when that happens, it isn’t long before I get another gentle nudge from Nikki in the form of an email. Never “judgie” or pushy, but wonderfully supportive, she always writes just the right thing to get me back to the gym or out on a hike.
When it comes to hiking, Nikki herself is very goal oriented, as in, “I’m going to climb 9,351-foot St. Mary’s Peak this weekend.” I’m not. I’m process oriented, as in, “I’m going to poke along this easy trail and stop every so often to sip coffee from my thermos.”
But Nikki’s cool with that. In the gym or out on the trail, she adjusts her personal training to fit you as an individual. She always goes at your pace and does not insist that you conform to her way of doing things.
So if you’re looking for a personal trainer who truly works with you as an individual and who provides gentle support and a great sense of humor along the way to achieving your fitness goals (or if you’re like me, your fitness process!), you could not find a better guide in your journey than Nikki Weiss.
